South Richmond News from Cllr Chas Warlow: Autumn 2024

Heathrow – a public nuisance?

More flights threatened over Richmond Park.

Many Richmond residents are forced to live with noisy flights overhead every single day, disturbing sleep late at night and early in the morning. Heathrow Airport is now planning to extend its flight paths further across our community, causing even more noise nuisance across Richmond Park and Richmond Hill.

Chas says: These plans threaten the tranquillity and special environment of Richmond Park, which all of us treasure so greatly. As a member of the Council’s Standing Committee on Heathrow, I will continue to support residents’ views strongly. I believe that our community, as well as the wildlife of Richmond Park, deserve a safe and peaceful space where we can breathe fresh air and hear the birds sing.”

Concerned residents should join campaigning groups such as Friends of Richmond Park and SOS Richmond Hill (sos.richmond.hill@gmail.com).

Greens push Council to sort out Lime bike problems

As a Green, Chas is happy to see more and more people travelling by foot, bike, scooter, and bus. But he, like the rest of us, has seen that there are problems with hire bikes, especially in crowded areas like our town centres where they often block pathways for pedestrians. Chas and your Green councillors have taken action locally to ensure that Richmond Council sort out these problems. Bike hire operators will now be responsible for bikes which are parked dangerously or recklessly.

Thank you to everyone who voted Green in July

Chas, your local Green Party candidate in the general election in July, would like to say a BIG thank you to everyone who voted for us. The Green Party achieved a record-breaking result here with our highest-ever share of the vote. At this election, with many voters fed up with business-as-usual and tired of the established parties, 3,416 voters in Richmond Park chose to vote Green and send a strong message that we deserve better. Nationally, the Greens are on the up, making history by winning 4 seats in the general election. Quadrupling the Green MPs is an incredible breakthrough and will enable Greens in parliament to push the Labour government to be bolder on the environment, going further for a fairer economy, and mending our broken public services. Chas says: “Thank you all. Nationally, the Green share of the vote doubled from the last election. With a fairer voting system, like that used for the Scottish, Welsh and European elections, Greens would have over 40 MPs, not four. Despite our broken political system, the Greens achieved a record-breaking result here in Richmond Park and continue to go from strength to strength locally.”

Have your say on Richmond’s new climate emergency strategy

Richmond Council is now refreshing its Climate Emergency Strategy, which will make our homes more energy efficient, transport cleaner, protect our green spaces, improve flood resilience and shape community action for the next five years. Chas says: “I got involved in politics to get more local action for a fairer and greener Richmond. Residents are demanding that Richmond Council shows strong leadership and makes our community one which we can all be proud of.” You can get involved and make your voice heard here
